  • Your location: TEXAS, y'all!

    Age (If you want):43

How Primal are you: just starting out.....like this week. Not primal at all on the exercise as I am in training for the NYC Marathon. I have waited 4 years to get into this marathon, only to find that training in the hot Texas summers is not for me. I am gonna do it......already financially invested. However, I am exercising primally after that. Can't wait!

    Do you consume dairy:Minimal

Do you drink coffee or tea: Both

Motivator for switching to Primal: Like I said, training for a marathon but putting on body fat. This happens every time I do a marathon (3 so far). Frustrating!!!

Favorite exercise: Running.....playing soccer (which I have put on hold for running).....I teach p.e. so pretty much any exercise is good.

Favorite Primal food: Starting out, but have been enjoying the hardy salads!

Best part about being Primal: I hope I am gonna lose this excess body fat I've gained.

Worst part about being Primal: I LOVE sugar! No mas, Senor!

How Primal are you: arbitrarily 80% (follow the eating mostly, still working on the movement part)

Do you consume dairy: Yes and No. I focus on NOT having dairy, but if someone puts cheese in a salad I will happily oblige. I am dairy lover and I LOVE cheese, but dairy and me--- just don't mix.

Do you drink coffee or tea: coffee black, or every now and then with coconut milk and stevia.

Motivator for switching to Primal: Clear up health issues: thyroid and IBS; clear my skin; lose weight. (and its working!)

Favorite exercise: HIIT, weights, swimming, and cycling--- when I actually get off my ass and do something (I'm working on it)

Favorite Primal food: Bacon, avocadoes, and coconut butter. Can you tell I like fat? I have noticed though that vegetables just taste amazing to me now. It wasn't like that before.

Best part about being Primal: Feeling amazing. not being bloated and looking like I'm 8 months pregnant. Sleeping better, losing weight, skin clearing up. I used to read about those results in other people and think it was hogwash, but it's not! I feel so good and I'm looking pretty damn good (just ask my husband!)

Worst part about being Primal: Seeing people around me that are overweight, drinking "sugar free" drinks, and diet meals. It's not helping them. I want to tell them they can eat amazing delicious filling food and lose weight. Oh and not even crave that other stuff!

Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes, black with honey in AM and cup of green tea with honey

          • One of my friends was nagging me forever to read Mark's book. However, when I caved in and read the whole thing in one day, I had an epiphany. For many years, I've been trying to lose the same 20 lbs without success. I've kept a clean diet throughout the years, but because of my previous history with yo-yo dieting, my metabolism was effed up. I used to be such a cardio bunny and spend hours on end at the gym. Did I lose any weight? Nope, but I definitely grew incredibly frustrated. Reading Mark's book opened my eyes to this new lifestyle. Being a vegetarian for 20 years, I've naturally always eaten lots of grains. Brown rice and wholewheat pasta have definitely been staple foods. I'd easily consume 300 grams of carbs every day and get less than 70 grams of protein. No wonder I never lost the weight! Anyway, here I am, doing my first week, and hoping for some results.

How Primal are you: Hmm, I just started and I'm going to remain a veggie, so not sure yet,

Do you consume dairy: Yes, only organic.

Do you drink coffee or tea: Nope.

Motivator for switching to Primal: Lose weight, have more energy and feel AMAZING.

            Favorite exercise: HIIT, weight training.

Favorite Primal food: Eggs and berries. Not combined, though...

Best part about being Primal: Hopefully, the weight loss.

Worst part about being Primal: Probably other people's ignorance about this kind of lifestyle.

              How Primal are you: 95%

Do you consume dairy: Yes. Butter frequently, a single bite of cheese a couple times a week.

Do you drink coffee or tea: No

Motivator for switching to Primal: Health and general fitness. I worked out hard for several months at a time, but I work 70+ hours a week during the summers, and my hour and a half of exercise everyday is usually the first to go when work picks up. With the primal lifestyle I feel better and can maintain my body without all the exercise. All of the diet aspects I have read about in other books as well and feel soooo much better since I've started. I just started a month and a half ago, but feel great without the chronic exercise and the new diet.

Favorite exercise: Heavy weight full body exercises: squats, dead lifts, etc... and body weight stuff: pull ups, push ups, hand stand pushups, ect...

Favorite Primal food: Mixed seafood cooked in butter and spices :-)

Best part about being Primal: Constant consistent energy, body composition, tasty food. The list could go on.

Worst part about being Primal: Explaining to people why I eat the way I do.

                      • Hi everyone! I am Olive, a new recruit to the primal way of eating. I am very anxious to get rid of excess baby weight from having 3 kids in less than 4 years. I am also want to treat my body very well and to try to get back to optimal health. I have had lingering health issues ever since getting Lyme Disease 6 years ago. My Dr. believes it triggered fibromyalgia. Cardio and lifting stirs up pain for me, so I am happy to do long walks, ride on a stationary bike or swim for exercise. I have been switching over to pb for about 4 weeks. The first three were great; better energy, no hypoglycemia etc. I lost 5 lbs. This past week has been much more difficult. I am nursing my 4 month old and I have had days were I do not feel that I have enough milk. I also have bad headaches. I caved and ate a hamburger on a regular bun and half a funnel cake at a fair on Friday night. My headache went away almost immediately and I did not have milk problems for the whole of Saturday. Today is Sunday, and I am back one the wagon and again, my head is hurting and I feel my supply is down. Anyone know what is going on here?

Hello Olive! Welcome to this amazing community.

I believe that adopting the PB way of eating will be excellent for you over time.

I cannot not speak from personal experience, but my wife has often told me that nursing is very demanding on the mother's body, so I think you should take things slow. The headaches may not be diet related, but they could be symptoms of what is called around here the lo-carb flu. Given that you are nursing, I think you should definitely be on the high end of carb consumption. That doesn't mean that you need to eat grains (funnel cake? really?); I believe those "bad boys" need to be avoided completely.

Ditch the Splenda yesterday. That has been known to cause headaches among other things. I think that the jury is still out on Stevia, but if you need a little sweetness in your coffee or what have you, organic sugar, raw honey or maple syrup are much better choices - just keep it small.

Try to sooth your sweet tooth with fruits (dark chocolate once in a while too!). Berries are in season and a nice bowl with some cream...yum!

Check out the nutrition forum. There are several threads about Lo-Carb Flu.

I wish you well. Good luck on your Primal journey!
