          Motivator for switching to Primal: I used to be in really good shape and now I am in really not good shape... I'm 6'2 and 330 lbs and I would like to drop at least 30. I want to be able to do awesome feats of strength and move quickly again, partially because I dropped out of college after 2 years of playing football and rugby and I would like to go back and finish my degree and use my last 2 years of eligibility to be a ridiculously old defensive tackle.

          Favorite exercise: lifting weights, yoga

          Favorite Primal food: pork tenderloin, leg of lamb, bacon, asparagus, brussel sprouts, and broccoli

          Best part about being Primal: It puts meat in its rightful place and gives me a reason to seek out delicious and well-treated food. The full body, compound movement exercises and sprinting also make a lot of sense to me. Also, I no longer feel so bad that I was never able to do long distance runs.

          Worst part about being Primal: lack of snack foods that I can take out of the fridge and eat cold if I'm kind of hungry - also peanut butter sandwiches

            How Primal are you: Mostly primal but Barley, Rice, Millet and Quinoa are part of my diet.

            Motivator for switching to Primal: I haven't completly switched. The diet I'm on is similar to the Primal diet (I am halfway through the Primal Blueprint book). I've been following the diet I'm on after reading "Master your metabolism" by Jillian Michaels.

            Favorite exercise: Salsa, Argentina Tango, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Carolina Shag.

            Favorite Primal food: Dandelion leaves, Bee Pollen, Gojii Berries, (Strawberries, blueberries, black berries), Bok Choy, Green and Red cabbage, Spinach, Celeri, Sweet peppers, Avocado, Whole oranges & limes.

            Best part about being Primal: My Energy level is much better.

              Motivator for switching to Primal: I have an autoimmune disease similar to Lupus. Sick of feeling like crap. Cut out grains and sugars when I discovered the "cooling inflammation" blog (note, NONE of my docs ever said anything about modifying my diet, because I ate "healthy" in the first place)....realized I didn't know how to live a life without grains which lead me to research and discover PaNu blog and MDA.

              Favorite exercise: Running, although my disease had really taken a toll with extreme fatigue. Now, don't feel so focused that I need to run 30 miles a week, about 10 is much more manageable and I now have the time to mix in other fun stuff.

              Favorite Primal food: Bacon

              Best part about being Primal: Eating when I am hungry instead of restricting. ZERO cravings for carbs and just an itsy bit for sugar.

              Worst part about being Primal: Reminding myself not to get too regimented. Life is about enjoyment; if I make my left and right limits too narrow, I'm back to the CW of deprivation.

                How Primal are you: 60-80% (I really cannot give an accurate gauge at the moment) I am a current college student and in the military...sometimes one cannot avoid the dining hall doldrums and/or those wonderful MREs plus, 500 bucks a month is not enough to cover going Organic yet. However, in about 2 months I will have a salary! Cannot wait for the grass-fed!

                Do you consume dairy: Yes, during breakfast after PT sessions (Chocolate Milk and some cheeses here and there)

                Do you drink coffee or tea: coffee and tea, no dairy mixers, no sugar, sometimes honey in the tea. (But that's a treat)

                Motivator for switching to Primal: I have always been able to post an average score on the Physical Fitness Test and I could always lift great amounts of weight, moreover, I had to be taped with every height/weight record day to see if I passed the BF% test (Tell me about it, they still use a ratio to determine BF!) There were times when I barely passed and others where I had more than enough room, however, the readings were always around 19-20% BF; I was not too happy with that. Additionally, I have always had a constant cough, was prone to illness, was fatigued quite often, and had constant shin pain (Part of it was Compartment Syndrome, surgery fixed some issues, but now I run barefoot or use barefoot/minimalist shoes and the remaining pain has up and left.) So, I have thus picked it up after going through a ketogenic phase and I have dropped 16 lbs from 225 lbs to 209 lbs in about 3 months!

                Favorite exercise: Full Body lifts and Circuit Training, plus free running.

                Favorite Primal food: Bacon, steak, eggs!

                Best part about being Primal: Eating as much as I want and feeling energized and on the go!

                Worst part about being Primal: CW guides these massive dining services companies, so therefore, I cannot attain the proper nutrition all the time. The other day they served turkey that had 33g of Carbs?! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?! (I did not eat it, I had a salad instead and had to beg for extra virgin olive oil because the olive oil they have has soy oil in it! :O )


                • I am a husband, father of two, and an architect.
                  I am 40 years old and I live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

                  The last two years have been a gradual journey, deeper and deeper into primal territory. The decision to embark on that journey was the product of years of "preparation" ...if constantly repeating "Jeez, I look like crap!" and "Man, I gotta do something!" counts as preparation.

                  In the past two years I began playing hockey and started doing a bodyweight workout (SimpleFit) 3/week.

                  Everything about my journey has been slow and steady. Even starting SimpleFit was a slow process. I looked at CrossFit and was inspired (and terrified), but I didn't have the space for weights in my home and didn't know about the bodyweight CrossFit workouts, so I didn't jump in there. Then I found SimpleFit. (I don't remember how.) There were a few guys on the board there who were doing CrossFit too, or had moved entirely over to CF, so I was convinced SF was a good stepping stone to fitness. Still, I think it was three months between the decision to do it and equipping myself with a pull-up bar so I could do it.

                  The first year I made a lot of progress, but at the same time I don't feel like I made any really big changes. I started eating a little better, but not really any less. And the SimpleFit workouts amount to only 45-50 minutes of exercise per week. But I felt better about myself, and I took tremendous satisfaction in the workouts.

                  Year two was more of a struggle. I was beset by fatigue and lack of motivation; difficult to say in what proportion. I stopped working out for weeks at a time, and I was hard on myself during those weeks. Fitness is supposed to improve one's outlook, but it doesn't remake your life.

                  Now I am beginning my third year. I am feeling much better about the enterprise. I have more energy and have been pushing myself harder, but that might only be because of the arrival of spring, with its longer days and warmer weather. And, it has only been 4 weeks since the last time I fell of the wagon (for a month, that time).

                  I got an iPhone in Feb. and decided to try Lose It! because I had no idea how many calories I was consuming. It is informative and losing fat is nice.

                  I like taking my shirt off when it gets hot (must be my Italian side and my dad always did it). I am happy that I feel comfortable doing that now. I like it is somewhat difficult for me to buy an off the rack suit because my waist is narrow in proportion to my chest. I like feeling strong. But, as much as I like those things, I wonder where it all leads?

                  Will I still be dangling from a pull-up bar in 2 years? In 5? In 20? I'd like to think not...I prefer to imagine myself fit and healthy, but with my only exercise being play. Play being whatever physical activity I feel like doing.

                  Writing this out has made me realize that getting my diet more correct has eased my worry about this last point: before, exercise was necessary to stave off fatness. Now eating right keeps fat in check, and maybe I can exercise if and when I want -- not sure, it is early days with this new way of eating.

                  It seems clear that something must have changed in my outlook/mental make-up or I wouldn't have begun this journey.

                  It is less clear how that journey has changed me.

                    Age (If you want): 31

                    How Primal are you: 70% there I think. I haven't gone for the weight loss carb levels yet. I decided to eat Primal foods only but not restrict any of them yet. Just my way of easing into it. I've had no grains for 1 month and no processed food at all. I've had the odd indulgence, i.e strawberries and cream or a bit of good dark choclolate maybe twice a week. My idea was to get used to the primal food spectrum first and then think about weight loss, once I have learnt more recipes etc. Therefore I've been eating fruit whenever I have fancied it, bananas whatever without restriction. Despite that, I have already lost a little a few pounds. I've lost about 2 inches round the waste because any bloating has dissapeared. I'm going to do this for 1 month and then get my carb intake down to about 80 grams a day. I've got about 1 stone of fat to shift I reckon, so 6 or 7 weeks should do it. I might split that into two 3 week spells.

                    Do you consume dairy: Organic Yoghurt and the occassional bit of mozzerella in an omlette and cottage cheese in a salad.

                    Do you drink coffee or tea: Yes but I have cut down from what I used to drink.

                    Motivator for switching to Primal: I was looking for a simple path to better health. If I am going to do something for the rest of my life, then it has to make sense to me. I've tried all sorts in the last five years, much of which didn't really make sense to me. I came across PB by chance and everything about it made sense. I always had it in mind that eating natural has to be the best for the human body, but I needed someone to focus that vague intuition. PB has done that. I used to fall into the trap of working out excessively and then depending on will power to fend off the cravings, and I have very little will power.

                    Favorite exercise: Hiking or punching a heavy bag.

                    Favorite Primal food: Meat

                    Best part about being Primal: The ease of exercise plan is brilliant. Hiking is a hobby of mine anyway. Some gentle cycling is fun to do and sprinting once a week is no hassle. But the 'lift heavy things' part of it is the biggest eye opener for me. As someone who used to do reps, sets, super sets, with strict form, working different body parts in strict rotation from day to day, working out 3 or 4 days a week for 90 minutes at a time; going into the gym, or doing a body weight routine at home, for just 30 minutes twice a week, using no routine, just using the principles of really going for it and avoiding small single muscle exercises, never going to failure and never doing the exact same workout again, the feeling of freedom is great.

                    Worst part about being Primal: Social eating can be very awkward. Being invited round to my sister in laws and she has made some morrocan lamb with 'healthy' cous cous and home made, wholegrain flat bread, especially for me and I have to tell her I only want the lamb. Very tough. I try to keep it to myself and not be a 'preacher' but when you have to explain why you refused food, some people look at you like you have two heads when you tell them you don't eat bread, pasta or rice. People used to think the world was flat though. It's worth it for the results.

                      How Primal? - Just started, but have been cutting back on the carbs for quite a while - gave up sugar in 1978

                      Consume dairy? - No, been unable to digest since a baby

                      Drink Tea/Coffee - Not on a regular basis, then decaf.

                      Motivation? - Got the book liked what I read so thought it was worth a try.

                      Favourite exercise? - Salsa dance in general

                      Favourite Primal food - Three Harbours Beef, local beef raised on the salt marshes

                      Best Part - It's early days, but sleeping better, more energy.

                      Worst part - Eating with friends and family - they've all thought I was bonkers for years - this just confirms it.

                        Well, I've been reading the site for almost a year now, trying to go Primal for 4 months and loving it! But, just joined today. Let's see:

                        Location: Monterrey, NL, Mexico (I can't believe I'm the second person from Mexico, it's unbelievable!)

                        Age: 21 and a half exactly!

                        How primal? Not much, really. I mean, I've kissed good bye rice and pasta, eat like two pieces of bread in the last four months but all the meat I eat it's still corn-fed, so I know I'm way too far from the goals, but at least I'm on the right direction!

                        Dairy: YES! Although my intestines complained when I tried to do GOMAD I do drink at least 1 liter of milk a day, and cheese every once in a while. Like, very in a while.

                        Tea or coffee? Rarely. I'm the only college student in my class who won't drink coffee to wake up. Never. I just drink it when socializing, and it's usually either a latte or black tea, no sugar.

                        Motivation: Well, it's funny actually, but I don't have a real motivation. I just read the website, thought the advice made sense, and started following it. Although having reduced the amount of aisles I visit in the supermarket is a good motivator =)

                        Favorite Exercise: I suck at them, but Handstand Pushups. I can only do them with my feet on the wall. And pullups.

                        Favorite primal food: MEAT!!! My mom went vegetarian and I just couldn't do it. When I came to college I was CRAVING for meat. So anything meat is great. Also love chicken thighs when properly sauteed.

                        Best part: Food is great, exercise is simple, I don't get as sick as I used to.

                        Worst part: Being a college student with a huge homework load and a tiny budget.

                        I actually Stumbled on the website a year ago, while doing a summer internship in Boulder, CO (Go Buffaloes!!!). I was looking for easy-to-do recipes since I was living in an apartment with no kitchen supplies, and was a little sick of school cafeterias and doing the same food every week. I have to say I followed the advice for a couple of weeks before coming back to Mexico, but when the semester started I had little free time to cook, and I don't have neither an oven nor a broiler (reducing the amount of recipes I can do in a huge number). In january, I tried again but then this HUGE flu kicked me around for three weeks, and I had my defenses somewhere lower than the 9th circle of Dante's Inferno, my energy even lower than that, and couldn't cook. After that, finally made myself commit to it and started doing it by the book (which I made the school's library get, so I could read it for free, and leave it to all my schoolmates in case they are interested) and I've never felt better. Except of course for the exams week when I had to eat in the cafeterias again.

                          How Primal are you:This is only my second week. I have not eaten anything bad, maybe just too much.

                          Motivator for switching to Primal:I lost 25 pounds doing P90X but I am now in a rut. I am always hungry and need to get rid of the carb cravings and lose another 25 pounds. I also need to change my exercise routine.

                          Favorite exercise:Swimming and cycling. I did triathlons in my younger years.

                          Favorite Primal food:Steak, Salmon

                          Best part about being Primal:Eating the steak without the guilt. Not counting points. Not feeling so hungry all the time. Eating fruits and veggies.

                          Worst part about being Primal:Having a hard time keeping the variety going.

                          I have onluy been Primal for a week. I downloaded the book to my iPod as I couldn't find a copy anywhere and I didn't want to wait. I started my fitness journey 9 months ago after gaining so much weight due to lack of exercise and too much junk food with my kids. I felt sluggish and had no energy for my three youn ones. I wanted a change. I started P90X in June 2009 and had great success, but an injury set me back and I started eating too many processed carbs and feeling unhealthy again. A friend posted a facebook message how he was losing weight with Primal Blueprint. I read about it and here I am.

                            How Primal are you: ~75% primal. I've been doing this for about 3 months. I still eat a high-fiber english muffin for breakfast and if I'm at a resaurant and the risotto looks divine I go for it. Oddly enough dessert has not been the achilles heel I thought it would be - breakfast continues to be my biggest challenge.

                            Do you consume dairy: Yes.

                            Do you drink coffee or tea: tea - usually green or herbal

                            Motivator for switching to Primal: I haven't completly switched. My huband went hard-core after reading up on the Paleo diet, and as the main cook in the house I initally starting cooking this way to support him in what has been a very positive change. I'm also pretty cocky about my reputation as a cook and my ability to come up with recipes under constraint, so at first I was just enjoying the challenge of making a wide variety of satifying foods under the dietary contraints that he's chosen, but then I started to notice big differences in myself. My family has a strong diabetic history and I had no idea how much I had inherited that until I began eating this way and my energy and moods stabilized radically. It was a sobering eye-opener. It's also been great for my skin and hair.

                            Favorite exercise: hiking.

                            Favorite Primal food: Steak, bacon, mussels, clams, salmon, chicken, strawberries, blueberries, black berries, squash (all kinds), beets, spinach, onions, leeks, sweet peppers, Avocado.

                            Best part about being Primal: Although the difference beween wildly flucuating blood sugar and keeping a steady blood sugar is very dramatic, I'd be a liar if I listed that above what has happened with my skin. It's taken 5 years off my appearance and I'm vain enough to love that more. Ah well. :-) I'll take all benefits I can get!

                            Worst part about being Primal: Eating out and being a gracious guest. It can be challenging and sometime I'm simply tempted by non-primal foods that I adore. I try to keep indulgences within reason.

                                How Primal are you: Not 100% primal yet - had a nutrition consult and I only eat grains in the 2 hours after I work out. Otherwise it's organic poultry, grass fed beef, fish, and vegetables and fruits only!

                                Do you consume dairy: Not now - turns out I probably have a caisen intolerance!

                                Do you drink coffee or tea: A cup of black tea in the morning, another cup or two of green tea later in the day

                                Motivator for switching to Primal: Just had 2 babies in 2 years, and gained 60 pounds with each one (but lost 50 without much effort with each one...well, 17 of that was actual baby so a bit of effort!) left me 20 pounds overfat. I'd read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" a few years ago and was SO not down with the low fat, high carb schtick, AND I'm looking for ways for my kids not to be among the type II diabetes statistics of the future (I'm also a doctor, so I saw plenty of teenagers with type II diabetes in medical school. Shocking!) Mostly I've done sports nutrition in the past (BFL, etc.), but without a bunch of time to exercise - a busy job and two little kids - I could not get the last of the fat off, though I like to think of myself as a disciplined person. I've been looking around for diets that make metabolic sense with the actual wonderful data and biochemistry that we know so much about in 2010. I read Primal Blueprint over the weekend, and I am extremely impressed! Now if only my patients wouldn't look at me as if I have three heads when I tell them to enjoy the skin on their chicken and to avoid the vast quantities of frankenfood out there...

                                Best part about being Primal: Terrific energy and fantastic mood much of the time. If I'm grouchy - I usually haven't eaten enough. Oh, the fat loss! On my nearly-primal diet I'm down 15 pounds in 3 weeks. I want to follow my nutritionist's plan to the letter for the three months I signed up for, then I will likely go without grains altogether.
