  • Peanut Butter? Beans?

    Hi Everyone. I'm totally new and I'm still waiting for my TPB book to arrive.

    So can someone please tell me if peanut butter is OK. What about beans. I'm thinking these are not a part of the Primal way, but I don't understand why. I have about 100 lbs to lose, and I have tried whole-grain, lean protein without much success. I am really struggling with this bacon and butter stuff.

    Mark did a recent post on peanut butter. Not horrible but not really recommended either. I eat some.

    Fresh beans are fine (except soy beans.) Traditionally soaked beans are not too bad. Mark would say to avoid unless you are vegetarian. I eat them.

      I eat Peanut Butter & Co peanut butter. Our family of 3 goes through a jar in a month, so we don't eat much.

        I just sub. Almond Butter and Coconut Butter for peanut butter.

            The idea of primal eating is to avoid foods that are high in toxins. Beans and peanuts contain lectins that can cause inflammation. As hedonist mentions, there are ways to neutralize some of those toxins.....you can research the weston a price society for those recommendations.

            However, if you have lots of weight to lose, I think that sticking to simple primal basics is the best place to start. Lots of meats, veggies, fats, and fruits works well for lots of people.

              Yup, just easy on the fruits, it's considered a moderation group. Think of it like a dessert replacement (small amounts).

                barney butter is probably your best bet for an easy transition to almond butter. Tastes like almond butter, but has the same mouth feel as peanut butter.

                  It's not the bacon-and-butter diet despite what many here would have you think - you should be eating plenty of fresh and seasonal vegetables, and if you have 100 lb to lose, you should be fine with some fresh fruit as well.
                  Foods-formerly-regarded-as-healthy but not included on PB are as follows: wheat (bread, pasta, cookies, whatever), corn, rice (especially brown rice), beans, peanuts, fruit juice (this one is major). Milk is probably not a good idea if you are losing weight, either. Basically, these foods contain low-grade toxins (natural ones) that impair your digestion and do other bad stuff to your liver and guts. Fruit juice gives you a sugar hit similar to coke.
                  A typical meal consists of a nice piece of meat and a good helping of veggies, with or without a salad. Corn and beans are not vegetables. It should be plenty to fill you up until the next full meal, with no snacks in between. If it's not, eat more at mealtimes and avoid all mindless (and mindful) snacking.

                    The lectins in peanuts are especially hard on the gut and difficult to destroy. Gluten in wheat is a type of lectin (not all lectins are bad btw just the ones that bind to the intestinal wall causing gut permeability issues) It's why sensitive people can have allergic reactions to peanuts. The lectin in beans can be nutralized by soaking and proper cooking but they are still high in starch and really not ideal for nutrient density. Not as good a veggies.

                    I basically put peanuts along side grains

                    Would I be putting a grain-feed cow on a fad diet if I took it out of the feedlot and put it on pasture eating the grass nature intended?

                      I've eaten some peanut butter in the last year but have dc'd due to PUFA content. PB could be a minor part of your diet- a small amount once in a while. Beans are better to ditch from day one.

                        Peanut butter isn't great for you, but I'll admit that I eat about a jar a month anyway, usually in the form of curry. I do try and pick the "best" peanut butter I can find, usually organic with palm oil, and no HFCS or hydrogenated anything. But I still realize it's a treat, added to dishes for flavor and not nutrition.

                        You will probably get better/quicker results if you avoid it completely. But, personally, I LOVE peanut butter, and giving it up completely would make me feel bitter, angry, and deprived. I already gave up some other things I loved, and this is just where I draw the line, you know? Primal operates on the 80/20 rule so that people don't feel too restricted and miserable, and this is my 20.

                        So, is it bad for you? Yes. Do I eat it anyway? Yes.

                        As for beans, I would just recommend eating more meat instead. That's what beans are: cheap protein replacement for poor people.

                          It's probably peanut oil lectin that does it. Having been told silly stories about what causes arterial plaque for years -- well, in truth, likely inflammation from substances like this plays a role.

                          I daresay an occasional indulgence wouldn't do much harm, but what daily consumption of peanuts or foods made from them might do ...

                          Besides peanuts are afflicted with aflatoxins. What's on the open market in a modern country with governmental agencies to check these things should be under what's believed to be a dangerous level of aflatoxin. Still and all.

                          I really would stay away from it. It's pleasant enough, but life goes on without. It's not like it's caviar or champagne, and there are alternatives. It's really not worth it.
