  • PB rookie needs some advice



    Hi, I'm just embarking on the PB lifestyle and am glad to see so many helpful people on the forum. I'm a lifelong carb-lover but am committed to eliminating the bad stuff. I'm in the first few days of adopting PB, so can someone please tell me how long it takes the overwhelming cravings for the simple carbs to go away? At times it's all I can do to not devour a (large) bag of Doritos.

    About a week and a half for me. Longer for others, shorter for some. Hang in there.

      It depends on two things: who you are and how many carbs you're still eating. It took my husband six weeks because he was cheating all the time; when he went VLC for two weeks the low-carb flu went away. I went VLC immediately and it took me about three days to kick the low-carb flu. It varies.

      Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

        I'm highjacking the thread for a second.


        Griff: I'm sorry I'm asking, and if it posted somewhere else I apologize, but you keep mentioning your husband. For the longest time I thought you were a girl but your pic is definitely a guy, and I am a simple guy myself...


        I'm assuming (at this point) you're a guy and married with a guy.

        If it's the case just say "yes", and that is cool. I don't care about people's sexuality, but I am just a bit confused.

        Once you learn that you create your own reality and that you are fully responsible for your life, you can begin to see the world as it is and then you realize the limitless possibilities.

            I agree that it's different for everyone. For me, when I first started I hadn't read the book yet and just gut out grains, pastas, junk food...still thought fruit was great. So for a week and a half I was still eating a good number of carbs, but from fruit and tubers not crap. I didn't suffer the flu thing that others have mentioned.


            After that I knocked down the carbs even more without problem and don't miss them at all...most of the time! My higher energy more than makes up for anything I do miss, though.

              Actually, I hope you'd get to say "Yeah, we were married in Cali."

                Need-sugar-Feed-FAT is the basis. When you want to devour the bag of Dorito's, instead, devour some almonds or an avacado or a hamburger or take a spoon to the butter... not kidding The more you can stick to NSFF, the faster the cravings will disappear. I know it probably sounds crazy, but trust me. I learned the quasi-hard way, initial carb flu took me 3 weeks to kick because instead of trusting my mind and the advice about fat, I just said that it was "my 20%" and did it anyway... and 20% can quickly become 50 or 70% after a bag of Doritos is gone lol

                    My BF used to make fun of my 'high carb diet' but i'm just into my 3rd week, and I haven't really craved carbs. We both kind of shake our heads like we can't believe I'm doing this.


                    Sometimes, if I see baked goods, for example, I want them for a second or two, but I quickly tell myself that they are poison! Another thing that helped me is thinking about this not as a low-carb diet, but as a high-fat diet. Suddenly, I've been given the green light to eat lots of yummy fatty foods that are frowned upon in CW dieting. So far so good =)

                        As others mentioned, the cravings vary depending on the individual and his circumstances. I'm in my 6th week, and I've only had a few unseemly cravings -- donuts, crackers, or candy. 90% of the time I'm so full on fat/protein that I'm simply not hungry for anything at all.


                        Interestingly, the form of hunger I have now feels quite different from what I used to have. I used to feel _acutely_ hungry -- gotta get food NOW!!! -- multiple times per day. I don't remember the last time I felt acutely hungry. If I had a late or especially filling dinner, it's quite common for me to not feel like eating until noon the next day. When I do feel hunger now, it's more of a realization than a sensation..."Hey, I think I'm going to want to eat some food in a while, so I better start cooking it soon."

                          Congrats on getting started. My fiance and I both started the PB two Sundays ago and we both couldn't be happier with the change. My fiance experienced a desire for carbs until day 6 or 7 and I didnt experience cravings after day 3. I am particularly shocked with my lack of a craving for carbs because I was the guy who ate a turkey and cheese sandwich (with avocado) every day of the week at lunch when I was at work; I would often have a sandwich (or something with bread) at dinner time as well.


                          I feel great on every level and I can't wait to see myself (and my fiance of course) in a few months when we get married.

                            Maybe I didn't suffer for the same reasons that you didn't, Annie. I went paleo first, so I had a lot of fruit, the switch to Primal was easy as pie, and the return of fats made me much happier.


                            The other side of that coin is the "cheat" meals on Paleo never let my cravings fully go away. A few weeks ago, the order of Girl Scout cookies that I'd long forgotten arrived, and I binged on them. Chocolate is my problem (and I can't just eat a square of dark and call it a day), and I've been singing the praises of coconut oil bark as much as I can. If you thin that will help, search for the "uses for cocoa powder" thread here.


                            Doritos are a tougher fix, but I find that a can of sardines helps me get past a lot of grain cravings.
