  • New and interested in IF

    Wanting to get started on this soon and am interested in trying some IF. I have read some of the threads where the IFs are mentioned, but would like to learn a little more. Is IF eating nothing at all, or is it keeping the carbs below 50grams? Also, I have seen some mention a IF16 or something like that... 16 hours of IF and then what? eat all you want? Can someone give me a couple examples of what kinds of IFs people might choose?

    Can anyone give me a couple examples of IF? Once you break your fast, do you eat as much as you want, or eat minimally? Info would be appreciated.

      If you look up Mary Titus on the internet she comments a lot about how she does IF. I've found her comments really helpful and descriptive.

      The way I do it isn't too terribly rigorous. I take one day a week where I have an evening activity and on that day I eat my breakfast like usual but nothing else until the following day's breakfast. I might have a cup of coffee with cream later in the morning, but that's all (I have no heat in my office and it gets really cold and coffee without cream is just not right.) The breakfast I eat the following day is a normal breakfast and I resume my eating like normal.

      I have also done it where I push my breakfast forward as many hours as possible to extend the time between dinner the night before and breakfast the following day. That is harder for me because I have to bring my meal to work and reheat it in the microwave and I find this annoying. But it's good for those times when I'm just not hungry before work. I'm a breakfast person, I love breakfast and find it way easier to skip dinner. But others are opposite of that.

      Some people eat only once a day every day but give themselves 4 hours to do it and during that time they eat as much as they want. Others try to make sure that they have a 14 to 18 hour window of no eating every day. Taking a break from eating lets your body do other things.

      I have found that once I adapted to this way of eating, that it became really hard to eat a huge meal. So if I eat only one meal during the day, it's not going to give me very many calories for the day because I get full before I get very many calories in. So I only do it once or maybe twice a week.

        I have been doing IF for a little over a year now. I first started out doing a LeanGains approach of an 8 hour eating window. I did that for probably 6-8 months, and it was effective for fat loss or easy maintenance.

        Now, I vary my fasting. Some days I eat two meals, with the first one around noon. I usually do this on workout days. On my non workout days, I usually eat one huge meal in the evening, which is about a 20-24 hour fast prior. I might finish off the evening with a coconut milk and fruit smoothie, or some dried fruit and nuts.

        Varying the times I eat feels more natural rather than a strict timeframe each day. Plus, it helps me control my food intake better. If I know that I will be going out in the evening and eating a large meal and possibly having some wine, then I will hold off eating until then. That way I get really hungry and enjoy a satisfying large meal at the end of the day.

        As far as carbs, protein and fat intake, I really don't pay much attention anymore. I have gone more paleo than primal by not consuming dairy other than butter, and no potatoes. I have found that eating nuts, some fruit and sweet potatoes are all the carbs I really need. I just mix it up each day based on what I feel like eating.

        I used to count calories regularly, but found that I have a pretty good handle on my food needs to the point that I don't count anymore.

          IF is useful for losing the last few pounds. If you are just getting started with Primal, there are other things that will make or break you long before you think about skipping a meal.

            Ugh, what is with all the spam in the forum lately?

            I started doing IF when I hit a weight loss stall. I eat dinner around 5 pm and don't eat again until lunch the next day at noon. I was doing this every day until I realized I was only getting in about 900 calories. I find on days that I fast I just can't eat a ton of food at each meal or I feel sick. Now I'm going to do one week on and one week off of fasting so that my body isn't getting its protein from my muscles. I need to look up Leangains, that sounds like something I might like to do.

            I can say that my weight loss sped up a lot while doing IF and I had more energy.

                  I fell into IF naturally, by listening to my body and not eating when I'm not hungry. And by hungry, I mean HUNGRY. So in a typical 24 hour period, I eat a satisfying dinner with the family somewhere around 6pm, eat nothing else till morning, and except for coffee with cream or maybe a cup of bone broth, I don't eat another meal until late morning,usually 15-16 hours later. I have a substantial breakfast/brunch/lunch (leftovers or a big ass salad with meat), and maybe an after school snack with the kids, and then dinner again. On a typical day I consume most of my food between 10am and 6pm.

                  But that can change if my schedule (or simple lack of hunger) changes a meal time, and not every day is the same. I have found that snacking makes me hungry. If I have dessert 'just because' I will almost always wake up with a gnawing hunger. If I eat breakfast first thing because its breakfast time and not because I'm hungry, then I'm hungry again a couple hours later.

                    I too started IF to bust through my weight loss plateau. My plan is to fast 3 days a week for 24 hours, but I adapt that as necessary. Some days I fast for 36-40 hours, and some days I get really hungry and eat at 20 hours. In my opinion, it is really important to eat when you are genuinely hungry.

                    As for what I eat to break a fast, it's usually a full meal and I try to balance them with meat and veggies as well as I can.
                    I wish I liked to eat liver.

                        I actually have quite a bit of weight to lose, but didn't really get interested in IF for that reason. I sometimes stop and get some sort of junkie food for the husband and kids and I wanted to prove to myself that I didn't NEED that food and that I could wait until later even if I felt hungry. So I got interested to kind of prove a point to myself that I could always wait to eat until I had the right food. With this being said, I love it. I started with Fast5 but didn't really love the feeling of such a strict eating window. So now I have a butter coffee in the morning and then a big meal in the evening. I have only been doing this a short time but I feel really good. I think I will be only doing this on Monday-Thursday and then just eating meals whenever I am hungry Friday-Sunday. I do want to make sure I am getting enough protein in. I'm shrinking quick right now, and It's hard to fit a gigantic amount of calories in that one meal, which is why I have the butter and coconut oil in my morning coffee. Also, I did wait until I really had the primal eating pretty much down before I started 'skipping meals'.
