    Hi Everyone
    I have read Mark's book and been following the blog. Every time I try to go Primal I end up sugar binging. Today I ate a honeybun and I don't know why. I know the science and it makes me feel like crap. Any advice?

    How long can you go Primal before you binge?

    Are you completely avoiding grains?

      One honeybun doesn't sound like much of a binge, really. Don't beat yourself up over it too much.

      But you also don't have to go super low-carb on primal either. You could also eat sweet potatoes or fruit or something. It's way better than eating a honey bun, that's for sure. Maybe if you allow yourself to eat carby primal foods, you won't feel deprived and inclined to eat junk food? I know that happens for me sometimes.

        I agree. I had been cheating and with the 30 day primal challenge I've decided to purchase some apples and tangelos so I am hoping that will help me. Granted sugar is sugar, but fruit is better than the damn Mountain Dew or Pepsi. Important thing, don't beat yourself up. If you ate the honeybun for breakfast, make lunch and dinner as primal as possible. All those babysteps help. I'm no expert and haven't had dramatic #'s of loss yet, but I can say it's worth it that I am off my medications for blood pressure and GERD.

          It might take time to retune your body for optimal digestion of real food. In the mean time, you might find yourself craving fake food once in awhile. I did a once-a-week treat day at first and that was a great crutch. But now that my system actually absorbs most of what I feed it, I am rarely hungry. I should probably start eating a little less here soon. But anyway, I agree with relaxing about it for now. After a few months you will start to find real satisfaction in liver and spinach and actually dread the side-effects of sugar consumption. But for now, you might consider allowing yourself a little cheat once a week. Just to keep you going until you're stronger.

          Or, as above post suggests, get Primal with your cheats and buy some mangoes, melons, etc.

            First thing to remember about being Primal, is that this is not a DIET...Relax, and don't fret over some slip ups. We all have them:-) Like jenh said, just make your next meal Primal. Try bacon(maple bacon is best) dipped in dark chocolate for a sweet treat:-) Just remember to enjoy what Primal has given you...Rock Out with your Grok OuT!!!!!!!!!!

              And honestly, I'd be more concerned with the actual "bun" itself and not the frosting etc. Gluten just sucks.

                Thank you everyone. I read some on the links and I am not sure I can take 5HTP with a history of grand mal seizures. It has been almost seven years but I still take Lamitcal for them. Today was really bad. We have an awesome bakery and I knew I should not have driven past it but I did and stopped. I ate almost an entire loaf of Cinnamon Bread in the car. I really screwed up second day in a row. My heart is racing and I feel a little crazy now. I hope I can sleep tonight. I really don't know what to do with myself. My main motivation for starting the weight loss process last summer has changed and it is so much harder know to keep going even though I know the benefits and science. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow, I hope he has some advice too for me. I really want to be a whole healthy fit person.

                    I totally know where you are coming from. I am super addicted to sugar and anything baked and sweet. I have had my share of slip-ups since I started this journey a couple weeks ago. I agree with everyone, don't beat yourself up just eat Primal the next meal. Even 1 primal meal in a day is better than none. I can't vouch for how effective it is yet, but I read somewhere (I think Dr. Jack Kruse's website) that chromium picolinate can help with sweet cravings. I searched and Dr. Oz also recomends it. I'm starting today with 1,000mcg. I hope it works. I sit at a reception desk and have to keep a jar full of candy bars in front of me at all times - it's evil.

                      Cravings

                      I have not progressed much on Primal because I have given in to sugar/carb cravings for a long time until now. You explain it away by saying it's only once a week etc. But the reality is that until you reach breakthrough and have the health and vitality Primal gives you, you will hold yourself back if you are not strict. The unfortunate reality is that sugar/carbs feed the reward centres in your brain and thus you want the hit they give you. Art De Vany recommends taking BCAA's and that helps. But I keep regressing.

                      So, I have searched and discovered Dr Jack Kruse (a member of MDA) and his website dealing with Leptin resistence and his advice on how to make yourself leptin sensitive again. It is working - although I am only 3 days into it. My cravings have lifted and when they do come, they are less intense. The big test will be this Friday night when I go to dinner with friends who always serve bread, dessert and chocolates!!!! I have reached the point in my life where if I don't crack it, it will crack me. So motivation is a huge key here as is overcoming the carb addiction.

                      Have a look at Dr Kruse's website and see if his recommendations might help you.
