    Hi Mark,

    Thank you for Primal Blueprint and marksdailyapple.com!

    In your book "Primal Blueprint", when you're spelling out what Ken Korg eats and drinks in a typical day, you list alcohol separately from the protein, fat and carb intake. Why do you list the alcohol separately? Wouldn't it just count as a carb? Or do you list is separately because alcohol gets burned off before fat?

    Alcohol is not broken down into sugar in your body... Your body has no way to store it, so it uses it up as energy or dumps it.

      Because it is none of those things. If you have beer or wine there will be carbs in the drink, vodka however has no carbs at all. Alcohol is its very own macronutrient and as Cavebot says, your body can't store it so you will burn it preferentially to everything else.

          Now just a minute here.

          This simply means that the body will burn the alcohol first, and store the rest of your meal as FAT. Isn't this correct?
          If you didn't drink the alcohol, it would start burning your meal instead.

            That is correct Grizz. You will burn the alcohol and store the meal. Of course that depends on how much you drink, one small wine isn't going to give you a huge amount of energy to burn, so you will still burn your meal (so to speak ). But if you knock back 5 shots of tequila, you can pretty much guarantee that your ribeye is going straight to your thighs

              Hm... Does that mean one could actually live off only alcohol, assuming you were drinking frequently enough and supplementing the required vitamins and minerals to avoid deficiencies (i.e. no need to eat)? Disregarding the obvious disadvantage of being constantly drunk, of course...

              Say, for example, that you drank nothing but vodka and water for a month, you would not starve to death?

                This is pretty useful info for me. I'm going to Jamaica in late May (this is our second time, but first while doing Primal), and I don't want to mess myself up too much. It's an all inclusive trip and there are 5 bars around the entire resort. You can't help but drink a little when it's a free-for-all.

                So vodka has no carbs, what else?

                I'm still dreaming of the jerk shack they have down there with all the pork, sausages and chicken you can eat, open all day...and the coconuts in the trees that they'll knock down sometimes and crack them open for you on the beach.

                      It's not really the carbs in alcohol that makes you fat, it's the alcohol. For reasons listed above. Also, it's pretty high-calorie: 7 calories a gram, beaten only by fat (9 calories per gram).

                          check this out!!! Man in Iowa drinks Beer for Lent. Here's an excerpt from his blog:

                            For those of us that are following a VLC approach as we lose weight, what are you're thoughts on Alcohol while still in Ketosis?

                            As in I know Alcohol has a large effect on acidity, liver function, and is used first - in fact some alcoholics may appear to be fasting if tested my a professional.

                              Carbs or not - alcohol is still really bad for the liver which is responsible for detoxification and metabolization. We can't live with out a LIVEr.
