A great book I recommend that helped me to understand how society as a whole has gotten to where it is today is "Amusing Ourselves To Death" by Neil Postman. The instant gratification, me-first society is no accident. It is the product of our mediums of mass communication and of our image driven society. That book is a fantastic read, I highly recommend it. Finally, a post I can agree with wholeheartedly.
