Done with Yo-Yo Dieting

I’m 33 and haven’t felt better in my whole life since converting to the primal lifestyle. I’ve been living pretty primal for the past 4 months now… prior to that I was still maintaining a healthy lifestyle according to “conventional wisdom” and was in decent shape. But back in March, 09, my wife was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and forced her to eliminate all gluten from her diet… I wanted to support her as much as possible and so our entire house became gluten free,… however, I was still eating whole wheat bread when away from our house. Then two months later a friend of ours introduced us to MDA and I recognized Mark from the P90x dvds… Reading on made me realize the health benefits and it helped me turn the switch on in my brain to go primal…

I was initially contemplating whether I should, or even needed to switch to the primal way. I mean, I had lost over 50 lbs on conventional wisdom and thought I was pretty healthy overall… my cholesterol was down,.. my excercise routines were good and I ate small meals six times a day. So I was pondering whether I should give it a try or not, but I took the plunge since it wouldn’t be too much different than living gluten free. Ever since starting to go primal, I’ve been able to eat about 80%- 90% primal ever since and I must say that it was actually easier eating the primal way than trying to eat small meals 6 times a day. I used to have to worry so much about what I was going to eat and to pack my food everywhere i went… it just just plain ole stressful and tiring.

I have been able to drop my body fat from 10-12% to about 7-9%, and lost another 10 lbs, I sleep better, sprint faster, and jump higher and just feel better overall… Today I feel like I’m living primal and pretty optimal for my body. I’m 5’8″ and weigh 165lbs. Today I feel much more educated about nutrition, fitness and living a healthier lifestyle in general. I know that I will never be unhealthy or go back to yo yo dieting like I have experienced in the past. Thanks for the good work Mark. Grok on!

Imagine you’re George Clooney. Take a moment to admire your grooming and wit. Okay, now imagine someone walks up to you and asks, “What’s your name?” You say, “I’m George Clooney.” Or maybe you say, “I’m the Clooninator!” You don’t say “I’m George of George Clooney Sells Movies Blog” and you certainly don’t say, “I’m Clooney Weight Loss Plan”. So while spam is technically meat, it ain’t anywhere near Primal. Please nickname yourself something your friends would call you.

  1. Awesome job

  2. Spooky. It’s like you’re writing about me. I also lost some weight using Conventional Wisdom (running, low-fat, etc), and used to eat 6 times a day, to “keep the metabolism high”. What a pain! And it doesn’t fully work anyways, as my weight loss plateaued for two years. Since going primal/IF, I suddenly started losing weight again – 20 lbs in 4 months.

Anyways great job and great pics!

  3. Good Job… You don’t “just get fat in your 30’s”!

    • Agreed! I did that in my 20’s…and made the switch in my 30’s.

  8. Way to go there. You look amazing man. Congrats. I, like you, have noticed amazing results ever since I went primal. I am an avid racquetball player and most of my meals consisted of big portion of meats, veggies, and a load of grains or starchy tubers. This is what my trainer made me eat. Still, I was in a pretty good shape. I decided to go primal to see if it could get rid of my acne A month and three weeks later, I have lost over 10 lbs, become faster and stronger during my games, and have noticed a considerable improvement of my acne. I haven’t even cheated for over a month, it is just not worth it. Grok on!

  13. I completely agree! No more yo-yo dieting and we all feel great on this diet. It truly is a lifestyle change and not just a temporary fad. I mean, given this gift of knowledge, how could I ever go back to eating wheat and sugar???

  30. I had a similar experience with my daughter. She was diagnosed with MS and was giving herself a shot EVERY day. She did a massive amount of research and found a great deal of evidence linking auto immune disease’s to grains. She found Mark’s site and went primal. I decided to share the journey with her. Wow. What a great decision! She is off of the meds and feels better than ever. I have lost 20 pounds and 2% body fat in 4 months. At age 53!

  31. Let’s be clear here: He didn’t say those pics were pre-primal and post primal. He said he lost 50 lbs in the conventional manner and then lost another 10 after going primal. I suspect the “before pics” are before the conventional diet. Clearly he attributes further success and better vitality to primal dieting, but not the entire transformation between the pictures.

  33. Great Work. It continues to amaze me at the results people are getting from taking the plunge into primal and refusing to take the same old nutritional advice ( grain, dairy) at face value. Great job…

  35. I have to say, I get really excited reading all these success stories! I feel so happy for everyone who’s converted to the Primal Way. Because of these, I just recently decided to drop the “carb cycling” diet I was on (as one day of pure junk just makes me feel like I’m going into a coma), and go the Primal route myself. Look forward to seeing me up there soon!

    Thanks to everyone.

  36. Excellent success story! Makes me want to take the leap myself.

I’m leaning in the direction of going primal but I have no book to read! Us folk here in Canada have a harder time accessing the book *hint hint*

  38. Wow, those before and after pictures are great. I have a friend who gradually came to realize that he is gluten intolerant, similar to your wife, and his story actually led me in a round about way to low carb diets and this site. Funny how that works, eh?

Rob wrote on August 30th, 2009
  39. wow. 10%bodyfat? and you dropped it even further?! I too do P90X yet don’t follow the nutrition plan. I hope i get similar results!

primalmike wrote on August 30th, 2009
    • If I could offer any type of suggestion.. it would be to eat primal, and move primal… and not follow p90x so rigorously… i did in the past and got great results… but you can get the same results with the primal lifestyle. I’m not knocking the p90x program… I think it’s a fabulously constructed and one of the best home workout series out there. But I feel if you’re already living a primal lifestyle or can live a primal lifestyle, you’ll get better results in your health and your body composition that is sustainable without the crazy long workouts.
