I think that it is classic, spurious correlation.  Those that choose fast food and/or processed foods are much more likely to wash it down with a diet soda.  I have never seen someone eat fast food and compliment it with a fine wine. The high sodium content in processed foods go great with a sweet beverage.

I have a problem with how correlational research is reported in the media, because the average "Joe" does not understand the difference between correlation and causation.</description>
