Contest: Primal Iron Chef
A Vitamix! That’s right, a $500 blender. I’ve had one of these for over ten years now, and the things hold up. Want to make your own salsa? Almond butter? Puree some veggies? Or maybe you just like to drink your steak. The Vitamix will liquefy pretty much anything. It’s the Bugatti of the blending world. Courtesy of Gail Goodwin from Inspire Me Today, the winner will receive a Vitamix Blender.
In addition to the blender, the winning entry will also be featured as Saturday’s blog post right here on MDA.
The Contest:
Cue the dramatic music, take a bite of your favorite vegetable, steel your fiery gaze at the audience, because it’s time to play Iron Chef: Primal Edition!!! (hold for applause). Reader Nate came up with the idea for this one. For anyone not familiar with the popular Japanese import cooking show, chefs are tasked with creating an assortment of dishes that all include one secret ingredient. For the MDA version…
- Create a recipe using the secret ingredient.
- Write a step-by-step walk-through describing how to make the recipe in 1000 words or less.
- Include pictures of the finished recipe as well as pictures showing the process.
SECRET INGREDIENT: COCONUT. In whatever form you choose.
Guidelines:
- A cookbook style list of ingredients followed by a handful of “chop this, bake at such-and-such degrees” instructions probably won’t cut the mustard. Make it entertaining!
- Tips on variations or how to make the recipe as Primal as possible are always appreciated.
- Bonus points for clever uses of coconut (i.e. An egg and bacon quiche that happens to use a tablespoon of coconut oil may have slightly less chance of winning than a dish that is clearly coconut based or coconut influenced).
- Doesn’t have to be a main dish. Can be an appetizer, a dessert, just as long as it’s tasty and Primal.
For examples of how to do it, look at any recipe on my site. Here they all are: Primal Blueprint Recipes.
Another feature of Iron Chef is the short time limit. You do have more than a hour to complete this one, but it’s still a time crunch as all entries need to be emailed to me by midnight this Thursday. Due to the short time limit, I’m not anticipating many entries for this competition, which means if you do enter, you may be competing against only a handful of people for one of the better prizes. If you’re a blogger, this is a great opportunity to get a little exposure (and, of course, a blender). Once your submission is ready, email it to me with the subject heading “Iron Chef Submission.” IMPORTANT: Only original material created for the purposes of this contest will be counted. No previously published blog posts, folks.
Winner will be decided by me. The winning recipe will be featured on MDA this coming Saturday.
The Deadline:
September 30th, midnight PST. Only four days!
Who is Eligible:
Everyone.
Fine Print:
MDA reserves the right to publish and/or edit any submission.

just bought one of these for my wife’s 30th (9.25). it’s awesome. great prize!
I’ve recently learned that I could help my fibromyalgia by eating certain foods, and Marks daily apple has the perfect prescription. I could do better for myself if I had the right tools, and this iron chef has me excited!
Theresa
Man! Why do I have to be on the road THIS week? I have the perfect recipe. Oh well, good luck everyone! Can’t wait to see the results!
Oooo! I can think I can do this one!! Yay!!
Hmmmm…. Ideas, Ideas…. Which one to use?
Damnit. I haven’t been able to buy a good coconut for almost 2 months: every time they’re half rotten. Hopefully tonight’s attempt won’t fail miserably because I have a good idea or two.
Can we do a video??
If you’d like to include a video along with the pics and article that would be great, but a video alone won’t satisfy the contest criteria. For a video contest see this:

So excited! I think I have a recipe involving coconut, and oh my gosh I’ve wanted a Vitamix since Grok walked the earth!
Yeehaw=)
omg you would do this today mark. ups is delivering my vitamix TODAY. haha no promise that i would have won this one but i did get a refurb one at a bit of a discount. i think it’s gonna be my best purchase ever in the kitchen!
i just got mine on friday, refurb and all. Love it.
I’ve had one for a decade, and it just keeps working great!
That blender is so.. beautiful. I may need to try this.
MMMMM! I love coconut!
How many times can we enter?
I better learn to cook with coconut…quick! I’ve wanted a vitamix for a while now.
Can we do multiple submissions?
Multiple submissions are welcome for this contest.
Yay, thanks!
Great Contest idea Mark! I can’t wait. I’m allergic so my kids always think it’s a HUGE deal when I cook with coconut. You just made them both very happy.
Can’t wait! I have a great one for this!
Not as good as mine Muhaha LMAO Good luck everybody. Let the games begin
kewl…I’m still tinkering with a coconut enhanced meal, but so far it’s nothing special and pretty bland. I’ll try to come up with something super awesome starting 2NITE!
Man, I need more free time. Work is to insane this time of year.
How do we email you?
Dang! I’ve wanted one of those for a long time, too. But I hate coconut.
So I certainly don’t know how to cook with it! I hope there’s another iron chef contest in the future.
I just might enter this contest! I do have a recipe that calls for coconut _____….
I’m going to make up something newish, I think. I was popping almonds out of their skins as I was reading wishing I could buy a vitamix to turn them into almond butter as smooth as Barney Butter, my current love, LOL.
Do we submit a word.doc and photos as separate attachments? Or a PDF with photos embedded? Which would you prefer?
Good topic…
I agree that people should not take
non prescribed drug, intead go for
natural health supplement which more safer
and easy to maintain.
Hrm, I’ve been lusting after a Vitamix for so long, but I hate coconut. I guess I’ll try to think up a coconut recipe for the coconut hater! And who knows, maybe the winner’s recipe will change my mind…
I always get confused with this stuff, especially across timezones – is midnight September 30th when Wednesday 29th moves into Thursday 30th – or rather is it just on when Thursday 30th ends and Friday 1st begins?
I know Mark said 4 days, but as I am in a different timezone, I am not sure when he posted this competition, and hence not sure if there is 2 or 3 days left?
Cheers,
Luke
I’m pretty sure it’s when Thursday (30th) becomes Friday (1st) in the PST time zone. But I can see why there would be confusion, since 12:00am (aka midnight) is technically the very first minute of a new day.
One possible solution would be to include a countdown timer on the particular contest post. Not sure how difficult this would be for Mark to do, but I’m sure it would be helpful for all
Hi Maria,
I am hoping you are right as I have JUST submitted my recipe(s)…
Although my mum was the source of these great recipes, so if Mark chooses one of them – she gets the blender!
Dang – I’m far, far away from my Vita mix and home this week. GL to E1.
You ARE gonna post all the recipes, right? Even the ones that don’t win? It would be a shame if the rest of us didn’t get to share in all those wonderful creative ideas this contest is sure to generate.
Woohoo! I’ve already been experimenting with my coconut creations!
I have entered my recipe! Good luck everyone!
I think I was made for this one
Where do we submit the entries?
