Yo, Apples! It’s time for a little pre-spring cleaning. This week’s challenge is to clean out the (kitchen) closet. Empty your fridge, your pantry, the cabinets, and the deep freeze out in the garage. If it’s not healthy, if it’s not recognizable, if it’s older than the Clinton administration, toss it.
Don’t save unhealthy stuff “for the kids”, either. They don’t need that junk any more than you do. If you feel it’s wasteful, donate the items to your local homeless shelter or soup kitchen.
One of the easiest ways to be healthy and lose weight is to avoid turning your home into a minefield of temptation. Restaurants and movie theaters aren’t going to change anytime soon, but you can control what goes on under your own roof. So from now on, fill the freezer with frozen chicken breasts and veggies. Stock the cabinets with vegetable-based soups, low-sodium broth, canned tomatoes, almond butter, and olive oil. And make sure the condiments in the fridge are low in saturated fats, salt, preservatives, and sugars. As always, ask the Bees for help if you’re unsure about a particular item.
This week, bust your butt to bust your gut. Exercise every day. Park your car way out of sight. Surprise the dog with an extra-long walk. Make television commercials your own personal sit-up special. Bike with the kids. Walk after every meal. Make activity your middle name this week. Now get moving!
Most of us eat out for at least one-third of our meals. It’s a necessary convenience these days. Unfortunately, that means a lot of extra calories and unhealthy choices. It’s no wonder Americans have gotten wider as restaurant dining has become the norm.
This week, resolve to eat right when you dine out. That means no junk or fast food. No sea of bacon grease or pasta swimming in alfredo sauce. It means no basket of bread with butter before your meal, and no dessert after your dish (the food we eat after we’ve already…eaten?). Stick to salads, grilled fish or chicken, simple vegetable or fruit sides – and hold the grease, sauces, and spreads! You’ll feel really great choosing the healthiest thing on the menu. (And you’ll probably lose a few pounds).

This week I’m going to challenge you to take care of your emotional and psychological well-being. We often overlook dealing with emotional or psychological stress because other things seem more important – work, the kids, the bills, the endless errands. But it’s absolutely okay to be a little “selfish” once in a while and nurture yourself. You may have a weakness for never saying “no.” Perhaps you’re taking on too much, or feeling under pressure about something. We all deal with stress. Whatever it is, this week, it’s on us. Let it go to the extent that you can, and indulge in guilt-free “me-time”. Turn off the phone. Go see a movie. Spend an hour or two with yourself. Maybe even call in sick. This week’s challenge is to address your stress – and don’t feel guilty about it!
This week, Apples, let’s cut out all refined grains of any kind. You’ll give your blood, pancreas, digestive tract, and waistline a very healthy break.
There are lots of refined offenders, but here are the most common: white rice, white bread, so-called “multi-grain” bread, pre-made waffles and pancakes, dinner rolls, white pasta, crackers, cookies, cakes, processed foods made with corn syrup or corn starch, and of course, desserts and candies. Whew! These foods are cheap for manufacturers to produce – and admittedly, they are tasty. But they don’t offer much nutrition, and they can cause serious harm to your health if eaten frequently. Try cutting out refined sugars and starches for a week and you’ll notice a real difference in your mood, digestion, mental clarity, sleep, and energy level.
