My story won’t feature dramatic before and after shots. It won’t tell you that this diet will make you buff fast (though I think it will). Instead it portrays another reason many people go Primal – to address health issues – and outlines 25 years of health struggles, overcome.

I’ve never been more than 10 or 15 pounds overweight and I’ve always loved being outdoors and exercising. When I was in my mid-20s I started having terrible pain in the joints of my hips, hands, ankles, wrists and knees. Rheumatoid arthritis. I took a lot of anti-inflammatories and went on with my life the best I could, though I was limited in how much I could participate in the outdoor activities I had always loved (backpacking, fly fishing, swimming, cross country skiing, cycling). Got married, had a baby at age 30, and the joint pain eased up. Thrilled, I got a bike trailer and carted my little daughter all around in it. I had quit my writing job to be home with her and we lived off my husband’s modest salary as a newspaper photographer in Chico, CA. Life was good, despite fairly severe residual pain in my left hip (perhaps related to the fact that I was born with a malformed joint there/dysplasia).

Hey Mark,

It occurred to me after reading a number of other success stories that I myself had a success story to share, and while I believe that there are many to thank for helping me get where I am now, you have played a large part in my transformation.

So let me give you my back story.

Excuses I wish I had…

At this point it’s important I clarify a few things. I’m 45 and have been battling my weight for about 25 years. I can’t pin my body fat woes on any specific tragedy.

In July 2010 I went to the blood pressure clinic for my six month checkup. I had been on various meds for 6 or 7 years, the dose gradually getting stronger.

They also put you on the scales to check how much you weigh. So with my eyes shut, I stood on the platform, I didn’t want to know. Usually there is a “yes you’re overweight, try to eat healthily”, sort of comment – not this time. This nurse was matter of fact, “You are five stone (70 lbs) overweight, you need to do something, and it might help lower your blood pressure.” Quick to defend myself, I said, “I come from a long line of small round women (I’m 5’3″).” “No,” said the nurse, “you come from a long line of bad eating habits.”

For as long as I can remember I have been on the heavy side. I remember going through grade school being made fun of and teased because of my weight. I was raised in a traditional Hispanic household where almost everything we ate was either fried or refried. I grew up on sweet breads, sodas and gallon jugs of sugar overloaded fruit punch. Life as a teenager for me was a living hell. My life was headed in a direction that I could not imagine. I turned to food for comfort. I was an emotional eater and I was such a wreck because of my weight. I quickly ballooned up to 250 lbs. by the time I was 18.

Quitting Chronic Cardio

real life stories stories 1 2I hope the publication of this particular success story doesn’t come across as too self-serving. Reader Brett expresses at length his appreciation for what I do, and for that I’m very grateful. My goal is to touch millions of lives with the Primal Blueprint message, and it’s emails from readers like Brett that motivate me to keep doing what I’m doing. But at the end of day it’s not about what I do. It’s about all of the decisions each of you make daily. I’ll continue to do my small part in challenging conventional wisdom and attempting to provide some direction amidst all of the confusion. But it’s up to you to take that information and do something with it. So make like Brett and his wife Beth and get Primal today!
