So you’re on the road – maybe away on business or partaking in the great American road trip – when your stomach starts growling. There isn’t fresh, healthy food in sight. The only place to stop for the next 100 miles is the upcoming gas station. And we all know the range of quality fare (spare me) your average petrol station offers. In this video Mark will guide us through making sensible food choices when your only option is the dreaded convenience store.
We’re clearly no fans of sweets around these parts, but we’ve received some emails and seen some forum chatter about how to properly “cheat”. Sweets and health do not go together, but if you’re going to cheat, you’d better know what you’re getting yourself into!
How to Eat Candy: Knowing Your Enemy
Candy is great, right? Because we know it’s bad. We don’t have to worry about sugar levels, we’ve made the decision of reckless abandon when we make the purchase, and eating sweet caramel nougat covered in….more nougat is a way of rebelling against, well, mainly against yourself, but it’s still rebellion, which is always a joy.
Just about everyone who is internet-savvy is familiar with Google Maps. What you may not know is that the Google Maps code is open source; meaning anyone can use the code to create new online applications. Some of these “mashups” are relevant to health and fitness.
My favorite is a simple tool that combines the functionality of Google Maps with a pedometer. It allows you to determine the precise distance you have covered while on foot.
Double-click on the map to set a starting location, and then double-click again to set your final destination. Gmaps Pedometer will calculate the distance for you. Gmaps Pedometer doesn’t restrict you to just two points, either. Keep double-clicking for multiple legs of a trip and the application will keep a running total.
Unnatural Acts: a Primal Approach to Jet Lag
One of the coolest things about being a 21st century “evolved” human is that we can travel to just about anywhere on this planet within a very short period of time and experience different cultures. All but our most recent relatives lived their entire lives never straying more than a hundred miles from their birthplace, yet we routinely hop on a jet, fly across the country or halfway around the world for a few days of travel and then return to our caves just as easily as playing a round of golf (or in my case, even more easily than golfing).
Before you head out, check out these tips for serene shut-eye. You’ll wake up tomorrow feeling renewed, refreshed, and ready for your weekend!
1. Eat a light dinner tonight.
Keep the portions small this evening. Going to bed on a full stomach is not healthy, and it also keeps you from getting the deepest possible sleep. You don’t have to go to bed hungry. But do not stuff yourself simply because it is now the weekend.
