Hi, Can't find Broccoli Rabe here in SE Ohio. So, I'm going to grow it in my fall garden. Does anyone know if it can be frozen? I know I can turn it into pesto but I'd like to have some available for sausage, bean and broccoli rabe soup in the winter.

What a frugal, student friendly way to make pesto! Added broccoli rabe to the shopping list. Will probably have to settle for a cheaper fish, though!

FNW-Thanks for the explanation of "blanch". For a second I thought it meant to say "bleach", I was just about to give my broccoli highlights!

Neat idea!

If anyone who got broccoli rabe in their CSA share doesn't find the bitterness pleasant... you can blanch* it before using it in recipes, and that will take care of the bitterness. Just a FYI.

*throw it in boiling water for a couple minutes, then plunge it into ice water to stop the cooking process.

I am going to try this with the bunch of kale I bought this morning. Glad to see walnuts instead of pine nuts in the recipe as most walnuts sold in the US are grown and harvested here. Though walnuts are out of season, unshelled nuts bought in December are fresh enough for summer pestos.

Thanks, Mark!

My wife is going to absolutely love this recipe. She loves pesto, but the commercial brands have so much junk in them.

Btw, awesome book! (I'm still reading it)
