Dear Mark,
This is sort of an awkward subject but I thought if anyone had any answers it would be you-- or at least you'd find out if you didn't know! Since giving up most grains about six weeks ago I noticed that my "elimination" is different than when I was eating whole grains. My diet is very clean and I get a lot of fiber, etc. so the act itself isn't the problem but more of the actual appearance of the "product" that concerns me. I read that Dr. Oz of Oprah fame has said that your daily deposits should be S-shaped (the shape your rectum is) as opposed to gumball-sized pellets which mine tend to be now. So...is this just what to expect now that I've stopped eating grains? Or should I just not concern myself as long as I go everyday? Sticky subject, I know, but pooping is our one common denominator and is an indicator of health, is it not? Thanks for any info you can send my way. Oh, and don't mind my blushing.

Hey Mark,

There sure has been a lot of research lately on Vitamin D and it's implications with health. I'd enjoy your take on this. Also, what are your thoughts with regard to cod liver oil? The controversy is mounting with regard to the ratio of Vitamin A and D in supplements (sush as cod liver oil). How do you address this with your Master Formula products?

Anyway....a potential topic for discussion.

Thank you.

Hi Mark, I have a question for your "Dear Mark" segment. I am a 26 year old female, and I have been crossfitting for almost a year and a half. This past May and June, my fellow crossfitters and I decided to Zone strictly for 4 weeks. I had never tried such a strict diet, but was surprised by the willpower I had! I don't remember the exact numbers, but I lost several inches and a couple %bf. I was in decent shape to begin with (5'6, 135lbs), and I lost maybe 6 or 7 pounds in those 4 weeks, but was more impressed with how lean I got. Anyways, I busted my leg open doing box jumps, and 10 stitches later, I couldn't work out intensely for several weeks. I "fell off the wagon," stopped zoning, and have since gained about 10 pounds back over the past couple months (it seems like all fat! The "skinny jeans" i bought back in June don't fit anymore! grr). I am now getting back into CF and the Zone, but I am more interested in really leaning out again. I don't want to put on much more muscle through CF, my arms are pretty buff and I am afraid of looking un-feminine! Any advice on leaning out (and not adding muscle) while still crossfitting intensely? What about adding more intense cardio intervals?

Mark,
OK, here's some of the stuff I wonder about when I read your blog - which I LOVE by the way. Even if it doesn't offer me a "quick" (read:easy) fix for my sugar addiction....
1. Don't you ever just want to sit down with a bag of Doritos and just pig out? Ever? Come on, 'fess up - there has to be something more than dark chocolate and red wine that appeals to you? Or, maybe not, I'm just curious.
2. When I head to the gym I'm overcome with ADHD. I want to do this, do that - whatever strikes my fancy. I may bench press, then push up, then assisted pull ups, then my attention will stray and I want to do lunges, squats. Whatever I can think of...is this "whatever" going to mess me up? Am I still accomplishing great things? My goal is to be a strong, fit woman of almost 40.
3. I would love another entry on irritable bowel/bladder - I bet this would also fit well with nutrition for rheumatoid arthritis.
4. I live in the land of hot dishes (casseroles for the rest of the country) - anyway to make a hot dish primal?
5. I get so excited about all I read on Mark's that I tend to want to talk about it - diet and fitness is so interesting to me. I wonder if your health/fitness gets in the way of some friendships or do you just have a fit circle you hang out with? My unhealthy (fat) friends think I'm being judgmental of them when they eat poorly - they don't believe that I'm really just worried about my own eating and am not even paying (much) attention to their plates/drinks/weight.
6. If you could tell people one key thing about their exercise program, what would it be? What's the ONE thing about diet?
7. Was your family health centered or did something encourage you to take this course in your life?
8. If you had a half hour to lift, or to do cardio which would you choose?

Can you say something about the workings of the brain on the primal diet? There have been tests that say some brain functions are slightly impaired, but those were measuring the first transition week, and we all know how that week is :) I'm in college, and I need all the brain power I can get! Has any real research been done about cognitive abilities and the PB?

I’m a triathlete - actually got onto this website from reading Simon Whitfield’s website - and am just wondering how I can use primal eating to enhance my performance. Specifically, I’m wondering about the amount of carbs I should be consuming. Most articles here say to reduce carbs as much as possible, but I don’t want that to negatively impact my training and racing by depleting my muscle glycogen stores.
