Grokfeast in San Antonio, Texas

On September 13th I asked Mark’s Daily apple readers to host a Grokfeast (a picnic/party celebrating the Primal lifestyle) and to send me the results. The following is one of 13 amazing submissions, the best of which will win an entire cow courtesy of US Wellness.

The Grok-on-Tonians: Just who do they think they are?

We are professors of philosophy and theology, artists, musicians, a military nurse, a community organizer, a speech pathologist.  Some of us are already well-versed in Primal ways, others are just starting down the path. We come from three different countries and are all parents of small children. Most importantly, however, we are the kind of people who get a thrilling little shiver up our spine at the thought of an entire grass-fed cow arriving on our doorstep.

Weekend Link Love: Brain Teaser Edition

mangalitsa shoulderThe Prize:

Heath Putnam Farms, formerly known as Wooly Pigs, was formed to produce pork equal to Europe’s best. So what did they do? They imported the Mangalitsa, a highly specialized breed that produces some of the world’s most juicy and flavorful meat and fat. And they haven’t stopped there. They raise their Mangalitsa with Austrian techniques, and process the pigs with special European techniques, producing pork and products very different from those generally available in the U.S.. If you’re looking for a new pork experience well beyond the joys of bacon, learn more about the wonders of the Wooly Pig, and check out Heath Putnam’s Wooly Pigs Blog. Today’s winner will get an 8 to 13 lb Curemaster’s Reserve Mangalitsa Shoulder worth $159.

Bonus #1: Wooly Pigs is offering a very special deal to MDA readers. You can get a live, 50 lb boar (male) or gilt (female) for only $280; they usually sell for $2400 and $900, respectively. You’ve heard of cowpooling, right? How about pigpooling? Heath Putnam of Wooly Pigs is extending this offer to MDA readers because he is a Primal convert and strong supporter of the movement. Additionally, this breed of pig is very rare. Without a market for them they risk becoming even more endangered than they already are. So contact Heath for pick-up (HP Farms is located in Iowa) and delivery options (which might be possible for large orders), and to place your order today.

Bonus #2: Heath Putnam Farms supplies their pork to Johnston County Hams for it to be cured. Get 20% off one item with promo code MANGA20 until 10/31 at Johnston County Hams. Limit one per customer.

Primal Texas Chili

texaschili1All too often a bowl full of chili is an uninspired blend of ground meat and canned tomatoes overwhelmed by beans. Ask anyone who follows the Primal Blueprint and they’ll tell you that the beans are unnecessary, but ask any Texan and they’ll tell you that putting beans in chili is an absolute travesty. In Texas, a bowl full of beans has no right calling itself chili, even when ground meat is thrown in.

Texas chili doesn’t let anything get in the way of and distract from the two main ingredients, chunks of beef and chili powder. Hearty, heavily seasoned and ranging from a bit of heat to fiery-hot, this is the type of chili that’s so thick you almost need a fork to eat it. Outsiders say it resembles stew more than chili, but it’s doubtful that this squabble over terminology has ever stopped someone from finishing a bowl. Texas chili is simply too good to pass up.

Mixed Martial Arts Fighter Goes Primal

It’s Friday, everyone! And that means another Primal Blueprint Real Life Story from a Mark’s Daily Apple reader. If you have your own success story and would like to share it with me and the Mark’s Daily Apple community please contact me here. I’ll continue to publish these each Friday as long as they keep coming in. Thank you for reading!

real life stories stories 1 2My name is Abe Wagner. I’m 31, 6’4” and 250 lbs. I pay my bills by fighting other large men in a cage in front of a crowd. My journey to the Primal Blueprint way of life was somewhat long and round about. I was originally introduced to the paleo diet concept through Crossfit. To say my understanding of the key concepts was flawed and incomplete would be an understatement. In retrospect, I was on what is commonly called the “fail-eo diet”. I was still trying to “stay low fat”…you know, for the health of my heart. Wow, I couldn’t have been more off! I was also getting the majority of the fat I was eating from nuts (read Omega-6). Needless to say it didn’t work out too well, and while my body composition had improved, I felt like crap all the time and had no energy, which eventually led me to declaring that the way of eating didn’t work.

Contest Poll: Primal Blueprint Workout Video

At the start of this 30-Day Challenge I put out a call for Primal Blueprint Workout Videos. And you responded with 17 top-notch clips. Boiling the submissions down to the top three was no easy task. My crew and I discussed at length what made up a good fitness video. Was it fun and entertaining? Was the workout something we can see ourselves doing? Did it inspire and keep us watching? How well did it represent Primal Blueprint Fitness? On and on. In the end we held a blind vote and ended up with the following three picks. To everyone that didn’t make the cut, many, many thanks for taking the time to put together an amazing contribution to this year’s 30-Day Challenge.
