In response to last month’s post about Carl Jr.’s fat fetish, conversation got going about occasional fast food indulgence (the temptations, the how-to’s, etc.) as well as whether we were placing too much blame on corporate marketing and not enough on individual immoderation. Reader Rachel offered this perspective:
I gotta say I don’t see anything wrong with indulging once in a while. I understand the popular opinion is that fast food is bad wrong and should be banished from the world. However, as Carla the first commenter stated “moderation”. We as individuals need to take responsibility for what we eat. The whole idea of “the companies made me eat it” is BS. We control our actions not the evil CKE empire. Yes it looks tasty, yes they market it that way- if they were to market cat food in the same way, would everyone eat that too? Come on now people, let’s start taking responsibility for ourselves and stop blaming the handsome fit young man enjoying the obscene mammoth burger for our lack of self control.
Whether you eat them by the handful or are drizzling their pure oils over a salad you are sure to enjoy the taste and health benefits of the wonderful walnut! (Toasting is optional in any of the following recipes. If you like ‘em raw, eat ‘em raw!)
Of all the nut oils, walnut oil is clearly one of the healthiest. In the olden days, it was used to cure many ailments including stomach and skin problems, tuberculosis (although, admittedly, the jury is out on just how successful that might have been!), hair loss and diabetes.
Today, however, walnut oil is more revered as a healthy source of fat. Walnuts are high in alpha-linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that is converted to EPA and DHA (long-chain omega-3s) in the body. Furthermore, walnut oil is also a great source of omega-9, which helps maintain artery health, as well as omega-6 (you gotta have some of ‘em), which is important for skin and hair growth as well as maintaining a healthy reproductive system.

Although we’re slowly edging into spring, there’s still enough cold days left on the calendar that are sure to find you reaching for a can of soup. I mean honestly, could a meal be any easier? Simply pop open a can, throw it in the microwave (or a saucepan if you’re feeling particularly culinary) and then sit back, relax and enjoy that bowl of dying vegetables and meat juice smothered in salt and preservatives. Wait? What? Yeah, you heard us…that canned soup you’re digging into? Probably not so good.
